October flew by!
Our OktoberFest season has finally come to an end!
While Oktoberfest may be over, we still have events lined up for you all year long! This winter, for example, you can visit our Downtown White Plains Winter Village & Holiday Market. Spend quality time with friends and family roasting marshmallows or playing board games in a private igloo, enjoying a special round of winter mini-golf, and shopping locally for unique gifts from nearly two dozen curated vendors. There’s more to share, but in the meantime, let’s enjoy the fall festivities first!
As we celebrate the changing seasons, White Plains continues to offer plenty to keep you engaged. From from fundraisers to game nights and Halloween fun, continue reading for updates on all things Downtown White Plains!
If you haven’t watched our OktoberFest recap video, you can view it here. Thanks to local BID Business, Holstworld, for making such a great recap!
Our Deep Dark Gum busting Secrets… Revealed!
Woah! We were blown away by the positive and curious responses to our recent social media post about our gum busting program (See the original post HERE). Thank you for all of the accolades and questions about this program. Based on the interest shown, we decided to include an article in this week’s newsletter specifically about our gum busting!
What is Gum busting?
Gum busting is our nonprofit’s answer to those pesky black dots all over the sidewalk. In case you thought they were tar, think again. Those leopard spots dotting the ground in front of your favorite establishment are, in fact, spit out used gum. Many years ago, we purchased two specialized gum busting machines from a company called Gumbusters.com, allowing us to remove this gum, as part of our sanitation services we provide to the downtown business district. Plenty of cities and nonprofits like ours provide this service.
How does it work?
This video from Dirty Jobs and info on the corporate GUMBusters site where we purchase our supplies explains the process pretty well. Essentially, we use a solvent that, when combined with steam and a special brush, helps dissolve and remove the gum pretty quickly.
Why don’t you just power wash?
We have power washed gum before, and while it helps…it doesn’t fully remove the gum, often leaving behind shadow spots. Our gum busting machines seem to do the best job. We save our power washing for traditional gunky jobs…like cleaning under trash cans or in areas that have handled obvious spills.
Why aren’t the businesses doing this?
Our businesses do a fantastic job of keeping their sidewalks and storefronts clean. We just like to provide some extra elbow grease. Our nonprofit exists to help support our local downtown and businesses, so we are happy to roll up our sleeves and “bust a move” when we identify gum-filled areas in need of our services.
What kind of inconsiderate person would just spit out their gum on the sidewalk like that?
Exactly! Did you know, we also sweep and remove litter from our streets seven days a week? More info on that to come!

They’ve prepared (a very quick and easy!) survey to help them refine their scope. Please consider filling it out—it will help develop a comprehensive marketing toolkit for businesses in the county to use down the road.
