Where to Shop This Small Business Saturday

Westchester Magazine, Dave Zucker

Assuming you survive travel, your family, and your own bodyweight in seasonal treats, you are now thoroughly fortified to brave the cold, early morning streets in what has become a capitalistic tradition roughly akin to the Running of the Bulls: Black Friday.

Yet why wake up early and risk getting trampled, when you could just as easily sleep off that stuffing stupor for another day and cross items off our shopping list at smaller, locally owned businesses? Not only are the deals just as thrifty, but by choosing to spend your money within the local community you're effectively putting money back into your neighbors' pockets instead of the corporations that ask you to start Friday at 6 p.m. Thursday just for the chance to fight each other for an extra 10% off adult apparel. (Yeah, we're salty.)

If that sounds like the more appealing option to you, then check out some of the great Small Business Saturday promotions and events going on throughout Westchester County.

Yonkers

Let's skip to the chase: You're going to be out and about anyway — this is Yonkers after all — and there's plenty of shopping both big and small to be had. But one thing that's going to help you through your day? Food. (Alright, and alcohol. That's two things.) Yonkers Brewing Co. will once again be hosting Black Friday Brunch this year, but they'll also be running their regular weekend brunch when it means the most: Small Business Saturday. Fuel your shopping spree with classics like a bacon-egg-and-cheese, avocado toast, or fried chicken and waffles, all of which pair nicely with cocktails, beer, or bottomless mimosas.

Recommendation: Try the new release "Terror in the Hollows," an amber ale with a pumpkin pie aroma for that comforting cold-weather vibe to prep for running store to store, or for once you're recovering.

White Plains

Home to a bevy of small and locally owned businesses — and a dearth of parking on the best days — White Plains looked at our wishlist and brought back our favorite present from last year: FREE PARKING!

All you have to do is shop at any participating local business like Westchester Road Runner, StretchLab, or Cantina Taco & Tequila to get validation codes that will reimburse you for your parking time on the ParkWhitePlains mobile app … up to two hours worth! Hey, you were going to end up shopping at a few of these places anyway. You might as well get a little something extra back by doing it Saturday!
