Harriet Tubman was an escaped enslaved woman who became a “conductor” on the Underground Railroad, leading enslaved people to freedom before the Civil War, all while carrying a bounty on her head. But she was also a nurse, a Union spy and a women’s suffrage supporter. Tubman is one of the most recognized icons in American history and her legacy has inspired countless people from every race and background.
“The Harriet Tubman – The Journey to Freedom” sculpture will be on display at Renaissance Plaza from April 1st – June 30th. We encourage the community to enjoy and learn about Harriet Tubman and her important mission. The City and the White Plains BID have created a calendar of programs and events to highlight the sculpture’s presence. Use the calendar below to learn more about each of these offerings.
The City of White Plains will be the only location in southern New York State to host the “Harriet Tubman – The Journey to Freedom” sculpture in 2022. We encourage the community to take advantage of as many opportunities as possible to enjoy and learn about Harriet Tubman and her important mission. About the sculpture: The 9-foot high, 2,400 lb. bronze sculpture was created by artist Wesley Wofford of North Carolina. The sculpture honors and pays tribute to Harriet Tubman’s commitment to and resilience in the fight for freedom. You can learn more about the sculpture at Wofford Sculpture Studio.
