White Plains Cares: Haiti Relief 2010

Open Letter to All Concerned Citizens from White Plains Mayor Adam Bradley

January 19, 2009

Dear Friend,

White Plains Cares: Haiti Relief 2010 has been formed in compassionate response to the earthquake disaster in Haiti.  Given the magnitude of this disastrous earthquake, one that has affected the poorest nation of the Western Hemisphere, coupled with the close connections of numerous White Plains residents to Haiti, I am compelled to offer the help of the City of White Plains and facilitate relief efforts.  By joining together with businesses, religious and community organizations, we have the opportunity to make a major impact on mobilizing the efforts.

I have recently convened a meeting of members of the clergy, several non-profit organizations, and city staff to determine how White Plains can assist the victims in Haiti.  At this time, money is the most immediate commodity needed.  Knowing that there is an urgent need for medical attention because the earthquake destroyed almost every hospital in Haiti, White Plains Cares: Haiti Relief 2010 has selected “Doctors Without Borders” as the recipient organization of all funds raised.  Doctors Without Borders has been working in Haiti for 19 years, most recently operating three emergency hospitals in Port-au-Prince, and is mobilizing a large emergency response to this disaster.

White Plains Cares: Haiti Relief 2010 will be fundraising in a variety of ways including:

  1. Boot Drive:  The White Plains Professional Fire Fighters Association, Local 274, will conduct a Boot Drive throughout White Plains on Friday, January 22nd, and Saturday, January 23rd.
  2. A Tribute to Motown: Annual Dance Benefit: The White Plains Youth Bureau sponsored annual dance benefit features local and regional artists on Saturday, January 30th, at the White Plains Performing Arts Center, 7 pm.  All proceeds will be shared between White Plains Cares: Haiti Relief 2010 and the Makindu Children’s Centre in Eastern Kenya.
  3. Direct donations to Doctors Without Borders:  Consider a direct donation to Doctors Without Borders, an organization providing immediate medical relief in Haiti for the past 19 years.  Donate at www.doctorswithoutborders.org or by calling 1-888-392-0392.  Tell them you are calling as a member of White Plains Cares: Haiti Relief 2010.
  4. Hard goods collection: When Haiti is able and ready to accept hard goods, White Plains Cares: Haiti Relief 2010 will organize the collection of food, clothing and other supplies and aid in its distribution.  More info on this as Haiti progresses in its recovery.

In times of such horrific events, the world becomes closely connected.  I urge you to take action with us to support our neighbors in Haiti not only through your donations, but through your thoughts and prayers as well.  Please support our current efforts.
